Itchy Bottom (Pruritus Ani)
Pruritus ani, or an itchy bottom, is a common symptom with multiple potential causes (outlined below). Whatever the initial trigger, it often sparks a distressing cycle of itching and scratching, which can lead to significant and persistent skin changes if not managed effectively.
These changes may cause prolonged discomfort and potentially further complications. To prevent chronic skin issues, it is essential to identify and treat the underlying cause and break the itch-scratch cycle.
An itchy bottom can result from a variety of systemic and local factors:
- Systemic: diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, blood disorders and psoariasis.
- Local – infection: candida, sexually transmitted disease, herpes simplex and local abscess.
- Local – contact allergies: soaps and deodorants, alcohol wipes, certain foods i.e, milk, caffeine and yeasts.
- Local – causing irritation: chronic diarrhoea, incontinence, haemorrhoids, rectal prolapse, skin tags/warts, threadworms (especially in children), and tight clothing with sweating.
