Solitary Rectal Ulcer
This is an unusual condition where one (or occasionally) multiple ulcers develop in the rectum. The symptoms of solitary rectal ulcer are often worrying such as mucus discharge, bleeding and feeling of incomplete emptying of the bowel after going to the toilet. Despite this solitary rectal ulcer is benign and unlikely to damage general health.
There are probably many factors which contribute to the development of solitary rectal ulcer syndrome i.e.
- Rectal prolapse: the rectum protrudes from the anus.
- Rectal intussusception: the rectum telescopes a nearby part of the rectum.
- Severe or chronic (long-term) constipation.
- Faecal (bowel) incontinence
Treatment
Treatment for solitary ulcers involves a combination of medical and lifestyle approaches aimed at healing the ulcer and addressing underlying causes. Key treatments include:
Medications: Medications for solitary ulcers include topical corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and promote healing, oral corticosteroids for severe cases, and antibiotics if there is an associated infection.
Dietary Modifications: Dietary modifications for solitary ulcers involve a high-fibre diet to promote bowel health and prevent constipation, along with avoiding irritants such as spicy foods, alcohol, and caffeine.
Lifestyle Changes: Lifestyle changes for solitary ulcers include stress management techniques to reduce gastrointestinal stress and good hygiene practices to prevent infections.
Follow-Up Care: Follow-up care for solitary ulcers involves regular monitoring by a healthcare provider to assess healing and make any necessary adjustments to treatment.
