Perianal Abscess

Perianal abscess can develop in various locations around the bottom, each showing similar characteristics. It occurs when pus collects within a confined space, creating pressure that usually causes significant pain. Pain is the most common symptom, but if it comes with fever, chills, or other systemic signs, you should seek urgent medical attention, as this may indicate a more serious infection.

You should consult a doctor promptly whenever you suspect a perianal abscess. If left untreated, it can lead to complications such as infection spreading, fistula formation, or even life-threatening sepsis. Early medical intervention prevents these complications and ensures appropriate treatment.

Treatment

Infections around the anus may be treated with antibiotics in the early stages however by the time an abscess has formed there is a collection of pus which will need to be drained with an operation. This will usually require a general anaesthetic.
